Why Sacramento Homeowners Choose South Canyon for Artificial Grass

Four things make us different from the turf-only contractors and national franchises in this market:

1. Most Sacramento artificial-grass options are either national franchise dealers (SYNLawn, ForeverLawn, Purchase Green) or turf-only specialists. We’re a full design-build landscape firm based in Orangevale – so if your conversion needs a paver patio, an outdoor kitchen, a retaining wall, or a smart-irrigation rewire to go with it, you get one contract and one crew. No subcontractor shuffle.

2. Cheap artificial grass on a 100F Sacramento day can hit 160F at the surface – hot enough to hurt pet paws and bare feet. Every install we do uses cooling-infill blends (silica + zeolite or antimicrobial alternatives) that run 15-25F cooler than uncooled turf.

3. Most cheap installs fail inside two summers because the base is shallow. Our spec – 3-4″ excavation, Class II road base compacted to 90%, decomposed granite leveling – is the difference between a 5-year install and a 20-year install. We don’t shortcut sub-base.

4. Most Sacramento artificial-grass installers won’t quote without a phone-tag week. We respond in 24 hours and price by the square foot, line-itemed, so you can compare us against any other bid.

Our 6-Step Artificial Grass Installation Process

We’ve installed enough artificial grass in Sacramento clay to know exactly where the cheap installs fail – usually within two summers. Here’s how ours hold up for 15-25 years.

  1. Free on-site consultation & measure. We come out, measure the conversion area, note slopes and drainage, document existing conditions, and listen to what you want (pet access, putting-green integration, hardscape extensions). Usually within five business days of your quote request.
  2. Written, per-square-foot quote within 24 hours. Line-item pricing – turf product spec, infill type, base depth, drainage, edging – with no “miscellaneous” rows. Compare it to any other bid in Sacramento.
  3. Excavation & sub-base prep. We remove 3-4″ of soil and existing turf, install permeable weed barrier, lay Class II road base compacted to 90%, then a leveling layer of decomposed granite. Sacramento clay needs this base depth – anything less and the turf will wave inside 12 months.
  4. Turf placement, seaming, and securing. Turf rolls are placed grain-aligned, seamed with self-adhesive seam tape and turf-grade glue (no nails through seams), then secured every 4-6″ around the perimeter with 6″ galvanized nails or staples.
  5. Cooling-infill application & power-brushing. Cooling-infill (silica + zeolite blend for standard; antimicrobial for pet-tier) is distributed evenly and worked into the fibers with a power-broom for upright pile and uniform density. This step is what makes cheap installs feel matted within a year.
  6. Final walkthrough + 6-month follow-up. Your project lead walks you through drainage flow points, maintenance (hose-rinse, brush-up every 3-6 months), pet-cleanup if applicable, and warranty registration. We come back at 6 months to re-brush the fibers, top off any infill displacement, and confirm drainage is still flowing – included on every install.

Our Artificial Grass & Turf Installation Areas

South Canyon Construction provides professional artificial grass installation throughout the Greater Sacramento Area. Our experienced installation teams serve homeowners in

Built for Sacramento Heat, Clay Soil, and Heavy Rain

Modern house exterior with manicured lawn and privacy screens.

Sacramento punishes artificial grass differently than coastal California does. Three local conditions we install for:

100F+ summers (30+ days/year). Surface temperature on uncooled turf can hit 150-170F on a hot Sacramento afternoon. Our standard installs use cooling infill blends that drop surface temp by 15-25F. Pet-tier installs go further with antimicrobial cooling infill. We don’t install bare-silica turf on south-facing yards.

Clay-heavy soil. Sacramento Valley clay swells when wet and cracks when dry. A turf install without proper base depth waves, ripples, and gaps within two summers. Our base spec – 3-4″ excavation, Class II road base compacted to 90%, decomposed granite leveling – is the difference between a 5-year install and a 20-year install. We don’t shortcut sub-base.

Heavy spring rain + atmospheric river events. Sacramento gets short bursts of heavy rain that overwhelm shallow drainage. Every install we do grades for 1-2% positive slope away from foundations and uses perforated turf backing that drains 30+ inches of rainfall per hour. We also install French drains where the original soil tested poorly.

Pet Turf for Sacramento Dog Households

If you have one large dog or two-plus dogs and a real lawn, you already know the math: yellow urine spots, mud, holes by the fence, and replacement seed twice a year. Pet turf solves all of it – if it’s installed right.

What “installed right” means for Sacramento dog households:

  • Antimicrobial infill (we install Envirofill or equivalent zeolite-based blends) that neutralizes ammonia from urine
  • Perforated turf backing that drains faster than natural soil – no puddles, no smell
  • 6″ galvanized perimeter staples every 4-6″ so dogs can’t pull edges up
  • 2.5″ pile minimum – shorter piles flatten under pet traffic in 2 years; 2.5″ recovers
  • Hose-rinse maintenance – once a week in summer, monthly the rest of the year

We’ve installed pet-tier turf for households with everything from one Golden Retriever to four-dog rescue homes in Folsom, Roseville, and Granite Bay. The premium-tier warranty covers traffic wear so you’re not buying a 3-year product and hoping.

Backyard Putting Greens

Sacramento has a deep golf culture – and a long backyard practice season. Putting greens are one of the fastest-payback artificial-grass projects we install:

  • Hole counts: 1-hole practice green, 3-hole short-game green, or 5+ hole layout
  • Square footage: typical residential green runs 150-400 sq ft
  • Breaks & elevation: we hand-shape sub-base for actual reading slopes (not flat)
  • Fringe options: real-grass fringe, low-pile fringe turf, or decorative crushed-rock surround
  • Cup placement: 2 to 6 cups, regulation 4.25″ diameter, brass cups with flagsticks
  • Integration: pairs well with outdoor living spaces, shade structures, and outdoor lighting for evening practice

Most backyard putting greens we install end up paying for themselves in saved range fees inside two years – and they pair naturally with a lawn-to-turf conversion since both projects share the same sub-base and infill steps.
